FROM THE MIND OF HANSHI ADAMS

CONCERNING TRADITION

What is "traditional" to some is not to others. It depends on style, family, culture. In martial arts the original focus was on defense with dignity. Having the ability to defend and cause great harm, but vowing not to unless life is threatened. Peaceful monks studying daily the practice of Military Arts for killing, yet having the wherewith to not. Fredrick Lovrett once said, "If you do something the same way more than twice, it becomes tradition. Do something the same way more than three times, it becomes a tradition who's origin is lost to antiquity. I agree!

CONCERNING STYLES

A style in connection with Martial Arts is said to mean a method of performing self defensive techniques and or kata in the same exact way everytime as per the style creator's design. Once you change any aspect of any technique, you are no longer performing the style you began with. Thus a new style is created! Only those who perform the exact style can claim to be a member of a style.
